The city had been on a Lex Luthor Lovefest for more than a week now. Last week during a Press conference in Centennial Park, Luthor saved the Mayor’s life after an assault from an assailant known only as “The Archer”. Now it was eight days later and Metropolis had declared today “Lex Luthor Day”. There were festivities through out the day, local musicians showed up to sing and play their instruments in honor of Luthor… Every interviewer wanted to get a word with Luthor. Over the last week all you could find on TV was replays of Luthor’s heroic actions and replays of his awkward encounter with the Daily Planet’s Lois Lane outside the hospital.
Since the Lois Lane/Lex Luthor confrontation, the Daily Planet’s sales had dropped a staggering thirty five percent. People were not happy that their star reporter had -In their minds, thanks to some well placed spin by Luthor- essentially wished the man of the hour dead while everyone else was hailing him as a hero. Any other news outlet would have dropped Lois Lane immediately and began damage control but Perry White refused to do that. You could say a lot of things about Daily Planet chief editor Perry White but one thing you couldn’t question was his loyalty to his staff.
As the clock approached two in the afternoon, we found ourselves focused on City Hall. Reporters were swarming outside, preparing for the moment. Finally the doors drew open and the camera flashes began to explode as The Mayor and Lex Luthor came out of City Hall side by side.
“Mister Mayor! Mister Mayor!”
“Mister Luthor! Mister Luthor!”
The media was dying to get a word with the two most powerful men in Metropolis. The Mayor placed his palms in the air, signaling for people to calm down and bring it down to a dull roar.
Mayor Berkowitz, “Ladies and Gentlemen, first of all I’d like to thank everyone who’s participated in our Lex Luthor Day events and fanfare. It’s been a splendid day in Metropolis and we couldn’t have done it without all of your participation.”
We begin to hear some applause as Berkowitz gives a nod, allowing the people to show the people of Metropolis respect for their participation in Lex Luthor Day.
Mayor Berkowitz continues, “Now, Last week everybody saw what happened. A Menace with a bow and arrow assaulted Police Commissioner Thomas Martin and myself in the middle of a press conference in Centennial Park. There’s no doubt in my mind that his intention was to take my life. However, one man’s bravery and courage and grace under fire prevented that from happening. One man stood up and declared “NO! We won’t be bullied by criminals here in Metropolis!” One man stood up and declared, “NO! We WILL NOT bow down to the heathens and thugs of society!” And because of that one man, I’m still standing here today. Standing here, once again, in the middle of a wide open space to show just how inspiring that one man’s bravery and courage has been. He refused to show fear to our enemies… The enemies of society and good nature. And through his inspiration, I refuse to show fear today. Over the course of the last week we’ve seen three other occurrences where Mister Luthor has stepped up and defended the fine citizens of Metropolis. This past weekend outside the theater, he thwarted an attempted mugging of an elderly woman…”
Luthor perks an eyebrow as he begin’s to flash back. We see Luthor in an alleyway with a thug handing him a hundred dollar bill before heading into the theater. We then fade ahead to that same thug attacking an elderly woman until Luthor rush’s over. The Thug goes for a very telegraphed right hand but Luthor blocks and hits one of his own making the thug spin around and stumble into the shadows.
We still hear Mayor Berkowitz’ voice, “…Tuesday he showed no regard for his own safety as he charged into a burning building and saved two young children…”
We flutter to a scene of Mr. Otis dosing a house in Gasoline at the opposite side from where the Children’s room was located. We see Otis setting it a blaze and then taking off. Just as a small crowd began to come around the house we see Luthor come out of no where and charge in, knowing the flames were mostly at the back of the house. We then see him come out with a young boy and girl, one under each arm as the surrounding crowd cheers.
We come back to live time and see a mother and those two very same children in the crowd at city hall, a tear coming from the mothers eye as she applauds.
Berkowitz continues, “And of course, Yesterday he took on two criminals who aspired to rob the Gas-n-Grub…”
Lex flash’s back again. We see Otis and Rico Suave’ in black jeans, Black T-Shirts and pulling down black ski masks over their heads in a car. They get out and rush into the Gas-n-Grub with shot guns in hand. There’s an Asian man at the register who immediately puts his hands up. However, it just so happened that Luthor was getting a copy of the Financial Journal. We flutter to Luthor walking straight for the “unknown criminals”, yanking their firearms out of their hands and turning them around on them. The “criminals” flee the scene.
We come back to live time and see the Asian man and presumably his family standing in the crowd, applauding.
Mayor Berkowitz, “So, it is with great pride and eternal grattitude that I stand here to present, Lex Luthor, with the Key to Metropolis.”
The crowd applauds as Lex Luthor steps forward. An intern stands between them with a velvet lined box that has the large key inside. The Mayor withdraws the key and extends it with both hands to Luthor. Luthor nods, accepts the key and then shakes hands with Berkowitz while holding up the key with his free hand as the press take their pictures. Finally the photo-op ends as does their hand shake.
Mayor Berkowitz, “Mister Luthor… Would you privilege us with a few words?”
Lex Luthor, “What can I say? I’m absolutely overwhelmed by this grand gesture from the city of Metropolis and of course, from you personally Mayor Berkowitz.”
Luthor turns to the press.
Lex Luthor, “Just know this… Criminals around the City… Your misdeeds will no longer be tolerated. Last week the fine members of the press used a term.. A word… They labeled Lex Luthor a “Hero”. I don’t consider myself a Hero. I consider myself a man. A man just like each and every one of you… But a man who refuses to stand idly by and watch these slime balls infringe on the rights and liberties of good, hard working, tax paying citizens. If that makes me a hero? Then so be it. If a Hero is what our city needs, than it is a roll I will embrace just as much as any other roll in my life. And Archer!”
He points right into the sea of cameras.
Lex Luthor, “Archer, you hear me and you hear me well… I got your message loud and clear… You killed an innocent man inside my own building this week. Killed him in cold blood. That man had a family. He had dreams. And in a single arrow, you robbed him of that. You robbed his family of a husband… a father… a provider… and a mentor. Well mark my words Archer… I’m coming for you… I’m going to use every available resource to hunt you down like the animal that you are… And I will find you, Arhcer. And When I do, you had better pray that God has mercy on your soul because I promise you Archer… I Will have None.”
“YEEEEEAH!”
The crowd erupts in applause and cheers as Mayor Berkowitz smiles and pats Lex on the back. Lex Luthor’s popularity was at an all time high and things only looked to be heading further upwards. Yes… It was good to be Lex Luthor. Very Good indeed.
