Roy was orphaned from a young age when his father died in a forest fire protecting navajo medicine chief Brave Bow. Brave Bow took Roy under his wing and raised him through his teenage years, working with him to become an expert archer until he turned 18 and departed from the village to join the US Marine Corps where his abilities were put strongly to the test as an archer. He served his four year term and returned to his original home in Star City where his tactics are considered unusual. He refuses to use anything but his bow as a weapon and has his own unique vision of what is good and bad in the world and serves more as a vigilante on the streets on Star City and isn't afraid to kill if he sees the situation fitting.
