Kyle was walking down the street in his hometown, good 'ol Coast City. At the moment it was a bright, sunny beautiful day, and Kyle was planning on enjoying it to the fullest. At the moment, he was lacking a shirt, but had on shorts and flip-flops, and his ever-present bag slung over one shoulder. He was going to meet J.R. at a cafe on the boardwalk so they could discuss their new comic series, the one they were doing for Hunter. He was also whistling "Pocketful of Sunshine" by Natasha Bedingfield, partially because it had been playing on the radio when he drove to boardwalk parking.
"And there he is! Everyone's favorite intergalactic policeman!" J.R. yelled as he waved at him from a table on the patio of the cafe, a small bar and grill called "Tubular". The chicken sandwiches were really good, and there was surfing memorabilia all over the walls and ceiling.
"You realize there's a reason the costume has a mask, right?" Kyle said as he sat down, setting his bag on the ground next to him.
"You realize I'm just messing with you, right?" J.R. replied, clapping Kyle on the shoulder from across the table. The waitress walked up, with a glass of beer in one hand.
"Oh, would you like anything to drink?" The waitress asked Kyle upon noticing his presence.
"Yes, I would like a glass of Heineken." Kyle said, already getting out his wallet to show her his ID. Upon presenting it, she nodded, gave it back, and left, presumably to get his drink.
"Dude, they always card us here." J.R. said after she left.
"It's no biggie, dude. So, you said you had an idea?" Kyle said, referring to the text message that had brought him to Tubular for this very meeting.
J.R. simply gestured at Kyle in response.
"You have to be kidding." Kyle said.
"Dude, I'm not referring specifically to you. I'm referring to the ring." J.R. said.
"...My God, that's genius!" Kyle said after a moment's thought.
"Exactly! Dude, you're a walking comic series!" J.R. said, pausing as the waitress set down Kyle's drink.
Kyle took a sip, and replied, "Our jobs are well-earned. Of course, we can't just take my life and put it in comic format. We'll need to come up with everything except the hero's powers."
"I know." J.R. replied as he reached into his own bag and pulled out a spiral notebook, handing it to Kyle.
Kyle looked through it for a minute, taking a few drink breaks, then said, "Do you have a first edition storyline?"
"I'm buffing the edges at the moment, but the general idea is that the hero, Hal Jordan, is getting his powers as the Emeralder of Section 26-17," 'Emeralder' having been the name that J.R. had come up with for the comics version of the Green Lantern, "and having him fight a powerful demon named Mallax as his first fight." J.R. said.
"Does Mallax have a skill set and powers?" Kyle asked.
"I said I'm buffing the edges. Chill, man."
"We gotta get the rough draft of edition 1 to Mr. Johnson by the end of the month, dude. It'll probably take me about a week and a half to draw this, provided nothing comes up." Kyle said, trying to emphasize the hurry.
"Chill, dude. I got it handled." J.R. said.
"You don't exactly look like it." Kyle replied, when he heard the shot. Right before it happened, there was one of those moments where everyone seems to go silent at the same time, resulting in a clear, loud bang echoing from the city.
"That sounds like your cue." J.R. said.
"When did you become the Green Lantern's sidekick?" Kyle said as he rose.
"Right around the time you showed me the cool new toy you'd gotten about a year ago." J.R. replied, smiling. Kyle ran off, muttering something. He ducked into an alleyway and let the ring do it's work, changing into the costume of the Green Lantern and flying off in the general direction of Coast City, toward what he would soon learn was a bank robbery in progress.
